I’m very passionate about lighting. It's the one part of club culture that I think gets ignored the most and when done correctly and with love, it has a big impact.
I create my own event and lighting is key to the vibe.

20th century pop culture inspires my work. I'm a 47yr old gay man and have seen a lot of quality in my 32 years of club culture so I bring all these references to my creations.

โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹Cosmic storytelling, my main idea is to have dynamic lights that progress in phases throughout the event, kind of like the acts of a theatrical production with operatic arias thrown in to raise emotions. Lights that move but don’t constantly flash or strobe in people's faces. Static and stillness with small oscillations contrasted with bigger faster action is sexy.

Lighting should provoke a “wow” effect and give rise to mystical experiences on the dancefloor.

This is my 3D laser grid effect.
It's quite impressive to see in real life.

It uses netting to create a spacious 3D effect. Here is a prototype in my bedroom with some pieces of netting.
On Feb 15th I will be scaling up the production for my next event.

The idea is to have 3 or 4 layers covering an overhead area. I'll use clothes hanger wire for its strength to suspend the netting if in an outside environment.

I love this effect because it is possible to create a very big effect over a largeish area (6 x 10m) with just 1 laser.

It's like having a dynamic overhead lighting rig but it doesn't have the intense glare of lights so it's less intrusive and much sexier than having bright fixtures directly above the dancefloor.

I imagine it would work well in the forest stage or also projected inside the forest or even projected onto the cranes or anywhere else you could imagine.

The 3D grid effect is optional.

I started programming lights for my party PRKM because I wanted to see better lighting at events.

My style is to have distinct moods during the event.

I use a program called QLC in which I was able to design my own DMX widgets and user interface. I have created various automatic sequences that can be modified live and also have given myself space to be totally spontaneous. Variety is key.

My setup:

1 x 1W RGB laser, fast motor = minimal strobing

2 x Spider moving head lights.

4 x PAR cans for colour washes.

All these are controlled with DMX.

I use various other materials like bubble wrap, tin foil and nets to push the lights further than originally built for.

I also paint 90s style UV backdrops with imaginary landscapes or pop art images from the 20th century. Also things like painting plastic dinosaurs with UV and scattering or hanging them around.
These small details have a big effect.

Here are some clips from my events.

This is the Interdimensional Transportation Machine.
Inspired by 1950s sci-fi films.

It consists of the 3D laser array and 4 par cans with metal kitchen foil tubes of light and 2 moving head spider lights.

Obviously not everything is going to be working at the same time and because of this, there is so much scope for many subtle and contrasting dynamic scenes.

This is the lighting setup for my club PRKM in Barcelona.

The laser has a big "wow" effect on people and they love taking pics of the spectacle.

Here are two options for a set up of the laser system.

In option A the nets would be like 3 or 4 rows similar to large tennis nets in parallel

โ€‹

In option B there would be space between each segment. I think I prefer this because option A is too static and symmetrical

The nets I use are very fine and are dark so at night they are invisible apart from when the lasers hit them.

Lasers are amazing but they lose the effect without constant smoke so using them outdoors isn't as easy to control as in a club.

My system solves this problem because it doesn't need constant smoke to display the laser's cute effects.

I think it would work equally well above a dance floor or out in the open as a trippy installation to gaze at and take pics of or maybe even in a forest environment it would look magical.

Here are some examples of a prototype of the 3D laser grid in my bedroom.

I projected the laser onto a building opposite my flat. The building is 8 stories tall and about 90/100m from my house so I hope this gives you some idea of the scale that is possible.

This is a prototype because it doesn't have the full array of netting but you get the idea.
On Feb 15th I will do my next party in a venue with a higher celing and this is what I was testing it for here. It worked really well as you can see. Any strobing is because of the camera shutter speed recording the laser.

These 4 par cans for colour washes are great but after a few years I decided to give them a new life.
The modifications are inspired by the movie Metropolis and 1950s sci-fi and made with kitchen foil and bubble wrap, welcome to the future!

I wanted to create a brain machine or interdimensional transportation machine.

Practically, the modifications bring out some much needed definition, silhouettes and depth to the regular colour wash effect.

These are the 2 spider moving head lights I use. Sometimes they scan identically and at other times I reverse the polarity of one of the lights to switch up the mirror effect.

I love creating UV backdrops and environments.

This is directly influenced by my early 90s rave days that I lived in the UK

This is an idea that could work in DARKROOMS.

What is it? It's one of those small artificial candles wrapped up in crushed kitchen foil.

It would be good for darkrooms because the light it creates is very localised like a spotlight but the light is blurry and has soft edges. It is warm and also has a very slight flicker like a candle which gives a very small element of movement. Perfect for darkrooms.

I was thinking that using small amounts of localised indirect blue or UV lights above or in corners that would create a subtle contrast with the warm candle lights.

I know it is very basic and homemade looking but the effect would be great for them to be suspended from the ceilings. The batteries last for days but I would have back up lights and batteries ready for a live situation. Please note that the blue is very exaggerated on the camera, the real life effect is more subtle.

This section is to show how all my ideas come together in real life. From video flyers to the opening doors of my club night and images and videos of the nights so you can get an idea of what the vibe I create looks like when it all comes together in a live situation

Thank you for making it this far.

I'm leaving you with an image of the DMX virtual console interface that I designed with the controllers and a video of it all going off in my studio.
